🫐Ingredients
Here are the ingredients we used for this recipe. You can find more information for substitutions below.
- Butter. Use high-quality butter (preferably European-style butter) if possible for lots of flavor. Make sure the butter is extra soft so that it's easy to whip together, so leave it out for at least an hour or two (preferably 4 or more) before beginning. You can use salted or unsalted butter for this recipe, just please note that if you're using unsalted butter you'll want to add a pinch of salt.
- Blueberries. Make sure they're nice and ripe with no blemishes. Bring them out of the fridge, then wash them and dry them really well, and let them sit out for a while to come to room temperature. If they're too cold, they will make the butter seize up.
- Milk. Again, make sure it's room temperature. This is more of a preference thing if you want your butter even softer.
- Vanilla. Vanilla bean paste or extract.
- Lemon zest. Optional, but adds a lovely brightness that complements the blueberries. If possible, use an organic lemon because we will be using the zest.

✨Substitutions
Here are a few suggestions on additional flavors to try, or simple variations to this recipe.
- Frozen berries. If you don't have fresh blueberries, don't worry! Just thaw frozen blueberries, and squeeze out any excess water from the berries.
- Use blueberry jam or syrup. You can use blueberry preserves or jam instead of fresh fruit if you'd like. Adding a drizzle of this homemade blueberry simple syrup would also add some more intense blueberry flavor. If you use jam and/or syrup, scale back on the added sugar to make sure the butter isn't too sweet.
- Freeze-dried fruit. Try using pulverized freeze-dried blueberries instead of fresh fruit. You won't need nearly as much, just a heads up. This will also intensify the purple color of the butter.
- Swap milk for cream or half and half. This will probably make the butter a bit richer, it will work fine to swap!
- Use a sweetener of choice. Use any sweetener you'd like, including honey, maple syrup, or agave instead of powdered sugar.
✨Variations
- Add other berries. Feel free to add more berries for more flavor, including cherries, strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries!
- Add more flavor. Try adding in other ingredients like cinnamon, orange zest instead of lemon, or a hint of almond extract for unique flavor profiles.
- Low carb/keto friendly. Simply swap the regular confectioners' sugar for your favorite sugar-free powdered sugar.
- Vegan or dairy-free. Swap the butter for vegan butter, and be sure to use a milk substitute instead of regular milk.

🔪Prep Work
- Let the butter sit out for at least an hour, preferably 4 or more hours so that it's really soft and easy to mix.
- Wash and dry the blueberries very well, then let them sit out for a while. If the berries are too cold, this will cause the mixture to seize and it won't come together as easily.
- Let the milk sit out at room temperature for 30 minutes to an hour.
- Measure out the remaining ingredients.
📋Instructions
Add the blueberries to a food processor, and puree until smooth with a few small chunks remaining. Set aside. (Image 1)
Add softened butter to a bowl with the lemon zest and some of the powdered sugar. (Image 2)
Beat the butter and powdered sugar mixture on low speed with a hand mixer or in a stand mixer with the whisk attachment, then increase to medium speed until combined, smooth, and fluffy. This should take about 2-3 minutes. (Image 3)
⭑Pro tip: Add less powdered sugar to start, then adjust to taste and add more as needed.
Add the blueberry puree, and vanilla to the whipped butter. (Image 4)
Mix until smooth and fluffy, adding more powdered sugar or milk as needed to adjust the sweetness and consistency. (Image 5)
⭑Pro tip: If the berries or milk are too cold, it will cause the butter to seize up and not come together in a smooth mixture. If this happens, place the entire mixture in the microwave for one or two 10-second increments at 50% power, just to get the butter warm enough to come together again.
Now serve and enjoy!
✨Top Tips
- Make sure the butter is really soft. For fluffy, spreadable butter you'll want the butter to be very soft! Not melted, just very soft, so ensure it sits out for a while for easy mixing.
- Use room-temperature blueberries and milk! For easy mixing, make sure the berries and milk are at room temperature to avoid letting the mixture seize up. This is important, although it can be fixed easily if the butter does seize.
- Sweeten to taste. Start with less powdered sugar, and add more to taste depending on your preferences.
