🤔What is dalgona coffee?
Dalgona coffee is a whipped coffee drink that is also being called "quarantine coffee" or "TikTok coffee". It gained major popularity on TikTok, going viral while people were missing their afternoon coffee shop visits. Now, everyone can be a barista at home with simple pantry and kitchen staples.
We're not entirely sure about the history of Dalgona whipped coffee. We've heard that this was originally a South Korean creation. The sweet, foamy, and sugary coffee tastes a lot like a South Korean candy.
Dalgona coffee is essentially the whipping together of sugar with instant coffee. Boiling water is used to create a thick and pillowy foam. The sweet coffee foam is then poured and served over milk. The foam holds its shape for a while, which makes it fun to look at and drink!
The only truly essential ingredients for dalgona coffee are instant coffee, sweetener, hot water, and your milk of choice. It's important to remember that this recipe needs to be equal parts of instant coffee, sweetener, and water. This ratio is very important, seriously! If the ratio is off, it simply won't turn out to be the right consistency. Dalgona coffee is in short, coffee whipped cream. If it's your first time making it, we've got you covered. There's a step-by-step video in the recipe card below.
☕️Ingredients
Here is our list of suggested ingredients for this tasty drink. Some additions are optional. Quantities are listed in the recipe card.
✏️Ingredient notes
- Instant coffee granules - You will need instant coffee for this to work. Coffee grounds don't work the same.
- Granular sweetener of choice - Our favorite is Swerve! You will need granular sweetener, that measures and tastes like sugar for this to work properly. Powdered sweeteners and other sweeteners will not work for this.
- Hot water - You will need boiling hot water to whip the sweetener and instant coffee together.
- Salt - We promise that a pinch of salt will taste delicious, but it's of course optional.
- Ground cinnamon - We love flavorful low calorie add-ins like ground cinnamon, but it's optional.
- Vanilla extract- vanilla extract is an optional ingredient, but it really enhances the flavors.
- Ice - You can enjoy this coffee hot or iced actually.
- Milk or milk replacement of choice - We use a low carb milk either by Fairlife. It is also lactose free, and only 6 net carbs per cup. Compared to regular milk which has 13 carbs per cup. You could substitute with your favorite nut milk like almond milk if you prefer.
- Heavy cream or half and half - We use a mixture of a milk with heavy cream or half and half in our keto whipped coffee. It makes this drink more like a keto ice cream coffee!
- Serve it with our keto salted caramel sauce if you're looking for a delicious treat!
📖Instructions
Feel free to view the dalgona coffee recipe instructions as a Google web story if you prefer a different format.
In a mixing bowl or container, add your instant coffee & sweetener of choice.
Add ground cinnamon and salt if using.
This is an optional step, but we recommend whisking together the dry ingredients before adding hot water for best results.
Add hot water, and immediately begin whisking vigorously to incorporate. Mix until the mixture is light and fluffy. The time will vary based on the tool you are using to whisk. With a powerful hand mixer, this only took us about 1 and a half minutes.
Hint: You will know that the mixture is ready when it is pale in color and forms stiff peaks. It should look like peanut butter!
Add optional vanilla extract to your half and half and milk mixture. Pour milk mixture into ice-filled glasses.
Spoon coffee foam mixture on top of the milk mixture. Enjoy!

💭Variations
- Vegan or dairy-free - Just make sure to swap the dairy milk and heavy cream for your favorite dairy-free versions. You could substitute heavy cream for coconut cream for that luscious and rich flavor.
- Decaffeinated - If you're still craving that dalgona coffee taste without the caffeine, you can simply use decaf instant coffee granules.

✨Tips, tricks and substitutions
- Please be aware that whatever milk or milk replacement you choose will effect the carb and calorie count by a lot. This isn't a weight loss drink per se, but it's an overall healthier choice if you choose to enjoy one!
- Almond milk or any other nut milk just won't have the same creamy consistency, but they can still be really tasty. It's all about your preference! If you're dairy free, try full fat coconut milk (in the can) for a thick and rich texture similar to heavy cream or half and half.
- You can use any combo of milk, half and half, heavy cream, coconut milk or any nut milks like almond milk that you prefer.
- You don't have to add salt, cinnamon or vanilla to this drink at all. It's totally optional. We just think it makes it taste even better!
- If adding vanilla extract, pour it in after you have whipped the coffee granules and sweetener for a while. If you add vanilla extract at the same time as the hot water, you will "cook" it essentially.
- You can easily substitute for whatever sweetener you want, but we think granular sweeteners work the best. Granular sweeteners hold their shape the longest, like regular sugar would. Powdered sweeteners just didn't work as well for us in the past. If you happen to find they work for you, let us know in the comments.
- You can use your favorite sweetener of choice that doesn't spike blood sugar, if you're concerned about that. We love granular erythritol and monk fruit sweeteners the best.
- It's best to make the keto dalgona coffee foam fresh. While the shape may hold for a while, it tends to dissolve the longer it sits.
- We really do recommend using an electric mixer for the best results. Like we mentioned, you can use another method, but electric mixers are certainly going to help you make the coffee foam the easiest!

🥣Storage
Unfortunately, we do not recommend storing the coffee foam after it is prepared. This drink is best enjoyed fresh. You can however mix the coffee foam with the milk, and store it in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.

📖 Recipe
Keto Dalgona Coffee
Ingredients
- 4 tablespoons instant coffee
- 4 tablespoons granular sugar free sweetener of choice (48 grams)
- 4 tablespoons boiling hot water
- ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)
- ⅛ teaspoon kosher salt (optional)
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
- 6 ounces milk or milk replacement of choice (could use any heavy whipping cream, milk, nut milk and half and half)
- 4 ounces heavy whipping cream (could use milk or anything else instead)
- Ice
Instructions
- In a small bowl or container, add your instant coffee, sweetener of choice, salt and cinnamon (if you’re adding extras). Add in your water.
- Use a regular whisk to incorporate the ingredients gently. This is mainly so that coffee and water don’t fly everywhere. After a minute or so, add in your vanilla extract if you’re using it.
- At this point, we switched to a hand mixer, because we don’t quite have the patience to keep whisking by hand. It will take a while, longer than you expect. Just be patient! With a hand mixer it took us about 3 minutes. Whip until it forms stiff peaks. The color will change a lot too. To us, it looks like super creamy peanut butter.
- Add ice to a glass and fill with milk or milk substitutes. We ended up using a blend of heavy whipping cream and whole milk. Spoon the whipped coffee mixture on top.
- Mix everything up, and enjoy!
