This Blackberry Ginger Gin Smash is a refreshing, flavorful cocktail for gin lovers with plenty of color! This cocktail uses a uniquely flavorful gin called the Liberator Old Tom Gin. Combine it with fresh blackberries, lemon, sage, and homemade sugar free ginger simple syrup, then top with club soda for a drink thats warm, herbaceous and lovely to look at it.

    Recipe Notes:

Sweeteners & Simple Syrup: For this recipe, we make our own ginger super free simple syrup. This is the main element of the drink that sweetens, as well as adds flavor, that should be added to taste.

Simple syrup is incredibly easy to make, but if making it sugar free (like we do) than we highly suggest using allulose. You could use whatever sweetener you like, but we find that allulose doesn’t crystalize like other (non sugar) sweeteners do. Just be aware that if you use sweeteners aside from allulose, it may crystalize after a few hours, so you may have to warm it up before using it in a cocktail.

A good general rule of thumb for making this simple syrup is equal parts water and sweetener, although allulose is slightly less sweet than regular sugar, so you may want to add a pinch more to achieve the sweetness level you’re looking for. We use 1 and ¼ cups allulose to 1 cup of water.

We advise sweetening this to taste. We added a full ounce per drink, as this is really the only element that adds sweetness. We didn't find the drink to be too sweet with this amount of simple syrup, but maybe add less and then adjust to your tastebuds. Everyone is different.

    Tools:

    • Sauce pan
    • Jar (for storing simple syrup)
    • Strainer
    • Jigger (for measuring alcohol)
    • Cocktail Shaker
    • Muddler
    • Bar spoon
    • Highball glasses
    • Heavy Duty Citrus Squeezer

    Let's Make It!

    1. Start by preparing the simple syrup. This can be done up to 10 days in advance. Cut up your ginger into small pieces, then add them to a small saucepan with your water and allulose. Allow allulose to dissolve, then bring mixture to a boil. Now, reduce mixture to a simmer, and let it simmer for at least 30 minutes. You could simmer it longer for a stronger ginger flavor. When the ginger flavor is to your taste, strain the ginger bits from the liquid.
    2. Set aside to cool. Refrigerate indefinitely! We aren't experts but we think that as long as it looks/smells fine, it's fine to use. Keep refrigerated.
    3. In a cocktail shaker, add blackberries and sage to the bottom. Muddle together.
    4. Add in fresh squeezed lemon juice, your sugar free ginger simple syrup, and your gin. Fill the cocktail shaker with ice, and shake until cold (about 30 seconds).
    5. Double strain to catch any leftover blackberry bits and pour into high ball glasses filled with ice.
    6. Top with club soda or sparkling water, stir with a bar spoon, then garnish with sage, blackberries, and dried lemon from the cocktail garnish.
