The Slurping Turtle

The Slurping Turtle is a casual Japanese comfort food spot has been in business in River North for years. The freshness and flavors combined with the comfy yet sleek atmosphere make it the perfect place to unwind and enjoy some drinks and a light, dinner with friends. Our favorite bites were the Hamachi tacos, the duck fat fried chicken and the hangover ramen! They have a large selection of sushi, ramen, appetizers and drinks. We find the value to be spot on, too. Definitely add this place to your list.

Check out our pictures for inspiration.

Anteprima

We’ve mentioned these guys before in this list as well as often on Instagram. There’s a reason for it. At Anteprima everything from the house made pastas, the locally sourced (and sometimes even foraged!) ingredients are made with care, and is such a great value for your money. These guys make you feel like family, and the staff is very knowledgeable about what to order, and the wine pairings to go with it. They often a wonderfully priced prix-fixe menu for $32 every Sunday-Thursday. Also, they will be hosting a 5 course dinner inspired by Sardinian and Tuscan flavors, accompanied by some excellent wine pairings for $80/person with tax and gratuity included on May 23rd! Call ahead to book your table, or keep your eyes on our Instagram if you’re feelin’ lucky, we will be giving away a pair of tickets for you and a friend to attend!

Here’s some more pictures of the beautiful food here.

Carnivale

Carnivale’s mission is to celebrate life everyday. This place is open 364 days a year (closed only on Memorial Day) and caters to large and small parties. It’s colorful walls give you the perfect idea of the flavorful Latin American inspired menu. They play around with the menu from time to time but there is something delicious for everyone on it. Carnivale even has a rooftop garden that they grow most of the restaurant’s produce in when the weather is warm. Outside of that they source products as locally as possible. We recently went in to try their Sunday brunch menu and found some real showstoppers like their twist on Chicken and waffles and their key lime pie french toast!

Uptown Donuts

This brand new spot just opened up right off the Wilson Red line, and it’s donut HEAVEN. Owned by a super awesome couple that grew up in the neighborhood, they churn out fresh donuts daily and are always offering a huge variety of flavors. They experiment with new, super fun flavors all the time. You can get a half dozen “mixed” donuts box for $9, which is a crazy deal, and mix and match flavors of their incredibly soft yeast donuts, super dense & moist cake donuts and their crunchy old fashioned style donuts. Some of our favorite flavors are the blueberry old fashioned, Oreo, cinnamon toast crunch, fruity pebbles, maple bacon and red velvet. Some other fun flavors include M&M, matcha and taro (or ube)! Seriously though, they usually have at least 20 flavors at any time so go in, get a box and try a bunch!! We’re so glad to have a donut shop close to home. The Northside was in need of one!

Fig & Olive

Fig & Olive is a chain that we are so lucky to have in Chicago, the food here is inspired by the Provence region in France, located between the Alps and the Mediterranean Sea. This blending of strong food cultures from this region results in delicious, light and flavorful cuisine. Light fare is seen throughout the menu as they don’t use or even carry any butter in the restaurant, everything is cooked in their signature olive oil. This was one of our most memorable dining experiences to date. Such lovely service, a bright & sleek atmosphere that makes you feel like you are somewhere in the Mediterranean and the spring menu flavors were perfect.  Some of our favorite bites were basically all of the crostinis, the scallops and the cheesecake! We will have to come back and check out their rooftop patio.

Burger Bar

We first visited Burger Bar back in December when we heard they had some of the best burgers in town, and it turns out that is definitely the case. We had to add them to our list of the Top 40 things we ate in Chicago in 2017 too. We were hosted on that occasion, but we definitely go back and get some of our fave burgers on our own! The last time we were in, we tried the Fa-Getta-Bout-It, complete with prosciutto di parma, fior di latte, tomato, pesto aioli and a fried egg. Let’s just say this definitely solidified that Burger Bar will take one of the top spots on our Best Burger List!

Here’s all the pictures we have compiled of our visits to Burger Bar!

J.B.’s Deli

This place has been in the Andersonville neighborhood for years, J.B’s is a classic Jewish deli also doubles as a pharmacy. It has a unique charm to it, and prides itself in being “one of a few Jewish delis”. This places offers a very authentic experience, and everything comes out in an “overstuffed” fashion, super fresh and delicious at a great value. We stumbled upon this spot while walking around Andersonville one day and we are so glad we stopped. One of our new favorite lunch spots!

Stanley’s Fruit Market

Stanley’s Fruit Market is truly a Chicago staple, and this produce market has been around since 1967, serving the community with incredible deals for fruits and vegetables. Their sales change daily, depending on what’s moving the quickest, but you can be sure you will find the most insane value in all of Chicago at this produce wonderland. They aren’t a full grocery, but they also have a Boar’s Head Deli, some bread and a few options for cheese, milk, eggs, pasta, spices and a few other items to whip up a delicious dinner. They also have an AMAZING juice, coffee and salad bar. Their prices are unbeatable. You can get a fresh squeezed juice for $1.99 for a 16 ounce, 1 ingredient juice and $5.99 for a 4 juice blend. One of our all time favorite spot.

Hope you guys enjoyed this list, we love hearing from you! Let us know what you think! If you love it, feel free to share this list on Pinterest or with your friends.

Until next time,
