    Recipe Notes:

I'm definitely not a doctor or nutritionist, so please just know that this post was created from my personal experience! I've struggled with hormonal acne for the past few years. There's lots of things that contribute to hormonal acne, but I've been looking for natural ways to help balance my hormones. Cue maca powder!

What is Maca Powder? Maca is actually a cruciferous vegetable like broccoli, cauliflower or cabbage, it grows mainly in the Andes in Central Peru. The edible part are the roots that grow underground. For many years, Peruvians have used maca root as a powerful supplement. Maca is said to increase energy and stamina, sex drive, enhance fertility and balance hormones. Maca is a very nutrient dense food, and is very high in manganese, copper, Vitamin B6, Vitamin C, Potassium, and Iron, which is another reason I love it so much! Here's a useful article that can explain this in much more detail!

What Does Maca Powder Taste Like? Many people don't love the taste of maca, it tastes kind of earthy, nutty, and has little bit of a brightness to it, with some pungent fruity and almost floral notes if you ask me! It's quite hard to describe. It pairs so well with chocolate and cinnamon, which is why you will find those ingredients in this drink. I actually don't mind the taste, so I like to put it in smoothies, or even stir it into my yogurt.

Maca and Me: I do feel that I have seen benefits from incorporating maca powder into my diet! Of course, you should always clear things with your doctor before adding this into your routine. Like I said, I'm not a professional, just sharing personal experiences.

Collagen: Collagen is an additional supplement I add to this drink to give even more health benefits! It's a great source of protein, and I like to add it to this drink because of the hair, skin and nail benefits it provides. Our favorite brand is Ancient Nutrition, and we have a 20% affiliate code for you guys, just use 'AFullLiving20' at checkout. You could also use your protein powder of choice if you don't want to use collagen.

Milk and Milk Substitutes: For this drink you will need about 12 ounces of milk or milk of choice. Some great choices would be nut milk. We love macadamia nut milk. We also sometimes add in heavy whipping cream for extra fat and creaminess, or sometimes we use a low carb ultra filtered milk like Organic Valley! While real milk adds protein, it of course makes this drink not vegan, and adds carbs, if that is a concern for you.

Optional Add-Ins: We love adding a pinch of ground cinnamon, salt and vanilla extract to amp up the flavor, but this is totally optional.
