In September 2012, I moved to Chicago from Traverse City, MI, where I was born and raised. I am so proud to call this place home! This little corner of the earth is a sight to behold with it’s stunning nature. It’s no wonder so many people like to vacation here – it’s our own little slice of paradise in the Midwest, especially in the summertime! The water, beaches and bustling food, beer and wine scene make it a wonderful place to getaway. You can always hike the sand dunes, go skiing or snowshoeing in the winter. There’s lots to do here if you enjoy the outdoors.
We know you’re going to get hungry while you’re at it. If you’d like to find out a little more about this gem of a place, check out this website. For now, I’m going to focus on some of the food! Here are 3 of My Favorite Places to Grub in Traverse City!
GRAND TRAVERSE PIE COMPANY
It was 1996 when Mike and Denise Busley opened up their first Grand Traverse Pie Company location in Traverse City, Michigan. Focusing on the delicious ingredients that different seasons have to offer (not just cherries!) their shop exploded – literally. It is now a staple in Traverse City, and Mike and Denise own 16 shops across Michigan and Indiana. Each shop – franchise or not – bakes pies fresh every single day. You can seriously taste the quality. There is nothing like a pie from Grand Traverse Pie. (At least, I think so!)
Not only are these pies delicious, but they also give back. When we were in town, we visited the Community Shop. This location is just a mile or so away from the flagship store, right in the heart of downtown, and they are doing a ton of good. All of the profits from the Community Shop go to the Grand Traverse Regional Foundation, that supports local youth across Michigan and Indiana.
The pie here is seriously delicious, and most Grand Traverse Pie locations offer lunch options as well that we highly recommend.
Is your mouthwatering yet? Mine is… If you have a location near you, you should totally sign up for the Pie Dough Club online. They give you free pie for registering your card, and for your birthday. Sweeeeet! If you don’t live close to a location, fear not, you can order pies online here. You can even send pies with personalized messages on the topping as gifts! Be sure to visit one of the Grand Traverse Pie Company locations if you visit Traverse City, to experience the taste, quality and spirit of the region.
MOOMER'S HOMEMADE ICE CREAM
Nancy Plummer was a first grader teacher, mother of 4 children and wife who happened to live on a dairy farm. For years, she considered bringing an idea to life – that idea was a great one. A premium homemade ice cream shop. In 1998, the Plummer family’s dream came true, and Moomer’s Homemade Ice Cream was born!
Since that point, Moomer’s has become a staple for locals and tourists alike. The storefront closes after Christmas until early March each year, although you can always special order for events or have your favorite ice cream flavors shipped. If you are in or around Traverse City during the time the store is closed, fear not, you can still find Moomer’s at any of these verified retailers.
We really recommend checking out this amazing shop if you have a chance. Lines are normally out the door to the main road during operating hours, particularly in the summertime, but man is it worth the wait. A really cool view of the cows that produce the ice cream is right beyond the shop, which really adds a unique experience.
Moomer’s has over 160 different flavors of premium, homemade ice cream to choose from, with over 20 available daily. As far as what flavors to order… honestly, you’re on your own! You can’t go wrong though. We promise. In fact, last time we were there we ordered two ice cream flights to try a couple different flavors.
Moomer’s is one the best parts of growing up in Traverse City. Good Morning America even named them America’s Best Scoop in 2008! I will always make time to visit Moomer’s, my favorite ice cream shop whenever I go home to Traverse City.
You can catch Harvest a few places around town. Harvest & Roaming Harvest (their food truck) serve up fresh, delicious, globally inspired street food that is always in season and from local farms and suppliers. How cool is that?
Sustainable food is becoming more and more important to pay attention to, and Harvest really nails it. Their menu changes every single day, (and sometimes midday!) depending on what they have in the restaurant. They have tons of different dishes for meat lovers and veggie lovers alike, so theres something for everyone. We love the farm-to-table approach and seriously enjoyed creative dishes. Wash it all down with a cold brew and you’re good to go.
Have you guys been to Traverse City before? Let me know in the comments! This list is just the tip of the iceberg of delicious things to snack on in Traverse City. We look forward to bringing you more lists like this!
