3 Cheap Cajun Places to Grub in Baton Rouge, Louisiana

Finding delicious places to grab cajun grub in Louisiana shouldn’t be too hard – in theory. We have found in the past that the tourism industry in this neck of the woods can make it hard for visitors to find out where the locals get their cajun fix. Baton Rouge has some of the best cajun grub in all of Louisiana (if you ask us) and there are tons of options! We spend (and will be spending) a considerable amount of time in this region in the coming years and wanted to share a bit of our food journey with you. We hope you enjoy our suggestions of 3 cheap cajun places to grub in Baton Rouge, Louisiana!

If you’re in need of beignets and cafe au lait….

Check out Coffee Call in Baton Rouge. That’s right, you don’t have to venture all the way to Cafe du Monde in New Orleans for some delicious beignets. (Although we highly recommend checking it out if you’re in NOLA. We will write more about that later!)

Coffee Call has been a Baton Rouge staple since 1976. Locals come in there to meet up with friends, conduct business, study and relax with a hot cup of cafe au lait and a hot plate of beignets or lady finger beignets (pictured). These guys also roast their own blends of coffee beans, prepare fresh soups, a salad bar and a french dip po boy during lunchtime!

A plate of lady fingers, a plate of beignets and a cafe au lait will cost you only $6.20! The staff is super friendly and everything is served piping hot and delicious. Check it out! We did a number on this plate of lady fingers…

If you need a po boy on the go…..

Go thru the drive thru at Po Boy Express. When in Louisiana, I feel like it’s almost mandatory to get a couple of po boys! My favorite types of po boys are grilled shrimp and Chamere loves the grilled cheese steak. What’s unique about Po Boy Express is that it was the first of it’s kind that had a drive thru! Quick service, with fresh ingredients with everything made to order at very reasonable prices. What’s not to love?

Did we mention it was our favorite?! Everything was so tasty! The bread to protein ratio was spot on, and I loved the size of the shrimp as well as how the shrimp were seasoned. Perfect. The portions were HUGE. Seriously a full size is like a 20 inch long sandwich and will only run you $12-14. We also enjoyed how fresh the bread was here. So tasty.

If you’re in need of some jambalaya…

Check out Rice & Roux in Baton Rouge! We got the red beans and the potato salad on the side, and oh man… the jambalaya was amazing! We’ve also heard the gumbo is to die for, if that’s what you’re craving. The jambalaya tasted like the meats (chicken and sausage) had been cooked for like 48 hours. The meat was so tender and flavorful. Amazing. The red beans were also the perfect consistency.

Everything here tasted very authentic, and fresh. The staff were super nice and conversational, even though we were only in there for a few minutes to pick up our take out. The atmosphere is casual. A lot of people came by to pick up their take out, but there were also tables filled with people sitting around eating. It was like, all locals (which we think is a good sign!)

Did we mention the portions were HUGE?! I mean like seriously huge. We got the family size which states 4 servings (felt more like 6 servings) of jambalaya plus 2 sides and 4 rolls for $23. You can’t beat that. We had lots of leftovers.
